Deep learning
The 'CIOB Artificial Intelligence (AI) Playbook 2024', glossary of terms, published by the Chartered Institute of Building(CIOB) describes deep learning as 'A subset of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks to recognise patterns in data and provide a suitable output, for example, a prediction. Deep learning is suitable for complex learning tasks, and has improved AI capabilities in tasks such as voice and image recognition, object detection and autonomous driving.'
In June 2021, BSRIA published the white paper, 'Artificial Intelligence in Buildings (WP 14/2021)' written by Henry Lawson. It states: ‘Deep learning is a class of machine learning algorithms that uses multiple layers to progressively extract higher-level features from the raw input. For example, in image processing, lower layers may identify edges, while higher layers may identify the concepts relevant to a human such as digits, letters or faces.’
